Spanish and Mexican Culture Program 2009

From June 29 to July 24

Learning or improving proficiency in a second language should be fun and rewarding. At UDEM, we have created a four-week summer program that will allow students to immerse themselves in a different culture and help them not only to learn and practice a second language but also to live and experience a unique lifestyle.

Courses:
Students will be able to register in one of the following courses according to a placement test:

  • Basic Spanis, 3 US credits, 48 hours
  • Intermediate Spanish, 3 US credits, 48 hours
  • Advanced Spanish, 3 US credits, 48 hours

Additionally, students will be registered in a culture course:

  • Life and Culture in Mexico, 3 US credits, 48 hours (24 contact hours and 24 practical)

As part of this course, students will visit some of the most interesting sites in Monterrey and its surroundings:

  • Mexican History Museum
  • Museum of Northeast Mexico
  • Contemporary Art Museum
  • Steel Museum (Horno 3)
  • Cola de Caballo waterfall
  • Flea market
  • Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery Company

Students will be given two different options to choose as the main component for this summer course:

Community Service Program
Can you think of a better way of practicing Spanish than by immersing yourself in mexican communities?

As a humanistic university, Universidad de Monterrey is committed to helping the underprivileged. During this experience, students will live the social and economic reality of one of Coahuila's rural communities by working on projects and creating long-lasting links with the community. A certificate for 72 community service hours will be awarded.

Traveling around Mexico
A country's culture is best understood by visiting some of the cities that hold the country's history and traditions. With this in mind, we have designed this option to help you discover the natural beauty in Mexico, as well as its unique folklore.

During this experience, students will travel to three different states within Mexico to compare traditions and to get a better idea of Mexico's culture. The places students will visit are: Mexico City, Puebla, and Oaxaca.

Both components will last one week and will take place during the third week of the program.

Held for four weeks during June or July 2009, this summer program encourages students (local and international) to become actively involved in one of UDEM's Rural Community Development Programs by participating in their daily activities and offering workshops for the children and women to improve the community's quality of life.

By the end of the program, the students will experience personal growth and develop their leadership competencies such as:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • Interpersonal relations
  • Team work
  • Communication
  • Problem solving
  • Planning and organization
  • Team management
